Available Chlorine

Chlorine is responsible for sanitizing your pool's water. After the chlorine needs of your pool have been satisfied some chlorine will remain in the water. This leftover chlorine is referred to as available or residual chlorine. Chlorine reacts with the other chemicals in your pool. Once these chemicals have reacted with the chlorine, the leftover available chlorine is free to do most of the sanitizing of your pool's water, because it isn't reacting with any other chemicals.

It is necessary to keep monitoring the level of available chlorine in your pool's water. It is the available chlorine that is responsible for cleaning the water. If there isn't any available chlorine, your water may not be sanitized properly.
