Cleaning Grout

No matter how you look at it, cleaning grout is not a fun job. The glue that holds your tiles in place and fills in the cracks between your bricks, this cement mixture not only clings to your wall and floor materials, but also to dirt. Help yourself avoid frustration by using some of the tips presented here for cleaning your grout.

In the Bathroom
Bathroom grout can be particularly nasty, especially in the shower. Inevitably, there is scrubbing involved when it comes to shower grout since it often gets caked with soap scum and dirt that cling to the grout for dear life. For the most effective cleaning of this grout you may need to employ a powerful cleaning product like one that contains bleach.

Cleaning Grout
Here are some tips on how to clean grout in your bathroom:

  • Open your windows
  • Put on rubber gloves
  • Spray or spread the cleaning product over the surface to be cleaned and allow it to sit for about half an hour
  • Scrub, rinse and repeat until all the mold and mildew has been removed
  • For tough spots, you may have to use an old toothbrush to scrub the dirt out

The above method of cleaning grout can be filthy and incredibly time-consuming, but it is effective.

Steam the Dirt Away
Tired of breathing in all those harsh chemicals when you clean grout? Have some extra money burning a hole in your pocket? Then consider steam cleaning your grout. Not just for carpets anymore, this is a relatively new cleaning method that has emerged over the last few years.

A steam cleaner is an effective way to clean your grout because it uses both water pressure and high temperature water vapor to explode that dirt away. Plus, the high water temperatures help to disinfect the area. And, if you have mold and mildew on your bathroom walls, then a steam cleaner will blast that unsightly mess right off.

The type of steam cleaner you need will depend on the job you are doing. There are different sized steam cleaning machines available for different jobs. For big jobs, like cleaning the bricks on the outside of your home, look for a larger sized machine. For smaller jobs that may not need as much steam power, get a smaller machine.

Cleaning grout is no fun, but dirty grout is shameful. It’s better to pull out your rubber gloves or your wallet to get rid of it than to let it fester and become worse.
