Cleaning Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is known for its durability, so it is often the material used to make kitchen sinks, appliances, cookware and utensils. One of the reasons stainless steel has remained popular over the years is that it can be quite easy to clean.

All Clean, No Damage
As long as it isn't damaged, cleaning stainless steel can be a snap. Why? Well, because stainless steel is highly resistant to many unpleasant conditions including rust, corrosion and discoloration. But that doesn't mean this durable metal alloy is invincible. If your stainless steel is damaged by one of these conditions, then you may have some problems.

To keep your stainless steel looking it's best, and to prevent damage from occuring, then follow these two golden rules when you are cleaning:

  • Never use abrasives and steel wool on stainless steel
  • Never leave stainless steel cookware exposed to extremely high temperatures for a long period of time.

Natural Cleaning
Olive oil, vinegar and club soda may seem like ingredients for an obscure carbonated salad dressing, but these can actually be some of the most effective cleaning agents for stainless steel.

Everyday olive oil can be used to remove streaky stains on your kitchen sink left by hundreds of loads of dirty dishes, while club soda is good for removing stains from cookware. If your stainless steel cutlery and utensils have been left spotty after being run through the dishwasher, then the solution is vinegar. Rubbing a dishcloth dipped in vinegar over your spotty cutlery can be a great way to polish and sanitize it.

Basic dirt can usually be removed from stainless steel using a light, non-abrasive household cleaner But for bigger stains you may need to utilize more powerful products to make your stainless steel sparkle.

Stainless Steel Cleaning Solutions
Make your stainless steel sinks, appliances, cookware and cutlery gleam again with these simple guidelines.

  • For labels stuck on stainless steel, soak the item in warm water. After, rub with a soapy cloth. If this doesn’t work you may need to dry the item and rub the label off with a cloth soaked in rubbing alcohol.
  • Grease can be removed from stainless steel cookware or appliances using a mixture of warm water and ammonia.
  • Rust stains on stainless steel sinks can usually be removed with persistent, regular cleaning using a household cleaner.
