Home Building Timeline

How long does it take to build a new home? Well, naturally there are a lot of variables, but the most important thing to keep in mind is no matter how long it takes, do not rush it. Sure, if you were a Ukrainian pioneer trying to build a hut out of sticks and straw in a valiant attempt to fend off the cruel unforgiving winter of the prairies, you’d probably want to get it done as soon as possible. However, modern homebuilders have a little more flexibility.

The size of the house, number of workers and weather conditions will all have an effect on your home building timeline. Generally it takes six months to a year. The model presented here is a seven-month guide. It should give you a good idea of what to expect.

Months 1 and 2

  • Secure the necessary municipal and state building permits
  • Begin excavating the site
  • Pour the foundation
  • Frame floors
  • Begin installing electrical and plumbing fixtures
  • Install first floor sub-floor

Months 2 and 3

  • Frame walls along with roof and ceilings, including door opening and windows
  • Install more sub-floors
  • Install exterior wall and roof sheathing
  • Finish electrical and plumbing fixtures

Months 3 and 4

  • Double check plumbing and electrical fixtures and exposed structural work
  • Install flashing and shingles
  • Apply windows and exterior doors
  • Install exterior trim
  • Apply exterior wall finish

Months 5 and 6

Months 6 and 7

  • Install appliances
  • Touch everything up for building inspectors
  • Landscape
  • Finalize payments
  • Move in and relax!
