Oxidizer

Your swimming pool is exposed to more contaminants than you probably realize. All those swimmers, plus continual exposure to wind, rain, and sun can lead to the growth of algae on your pool's walls. Daily treatments of chlorine can help to keep your pool clean, but you may want to pursue a shock treatment every so often.

Swimming pools, hot tubs, and spas can be cleaned using a variety of chemicals. Pools can be cleaned with chlorinated isocynurates, sodium bicarbonate, lithium hypochlorite, potassium monopersulfate, hydrogen peroxide, calcium hyperchlorite and certain ammonium, brominated, copper, or silver compounds. Cleaners that involve toxic vapor or fire releases usually add chlorine to your pool's water.

Those chemicals that do release chlorine are generally referred to as oxidizers. They kill various bacteria in your pool's water. Other chemicals are used to stop algae or fungus from growing.

Sanitizers can also be used to kill algae, bacteria, dirt and germs carried into your pool. Typically, chlorine products are used to for this purpose. These sanitizers are called oxiders of organic matter.
