Q&A | Fences : Chain link fence gate won't close smoothly

Title of Question: Chain link fence gate won't close smoothly

Name:Jan  City: Allen Park
Question: I have a standard chain link fence gate and the latch won't close smoothly. It catches like the gate is mis-aligned. I don't see anything wrong with it or the fence. Is there an easy fix?

Answer: Probably. If the latch never performed correctly, look for: A.) defective latch - this something that you probably would never notice just by looking, so try working the latch with the gate in the open position - is it still not closing smoothly? If it is still catching, try adjusting the nuts and bolts that hold it on the frame. If it still catches-up, there is probably something wrong with the latch - try a different latch, ensuring that all components are of the correct size. B.) the gate is too wide for the opening: in this instance, the latch will begin to close normally, then foul-out as the latch come into contact with the latch pole ( most newer chain link latches require a full 2" opening between the gate frame and the post); If the latch did function normally at one time, look for posts ( one or both) out-of-plumb or mis-aligned or incorrect hardware. None of the above? E-me.
