Q&A | Home Decor : Colors to make a room look bigger

Title of Question: Colors to make a room look bigger

Name:Alex  City: New York, NY
Question: Hey everyone, I just purchased my first apartment (in NYC) and have just finished gutting the place. Next step is to choose some wall colors. The apt is fairly small (under 1000 sq ft), so I'm hoping to go with a color scheme that is bright and opens up the space as much as possible. In doing some research online, I found some articles about using earthy flesh-toned hues to lighten up a room (lot's of info on www.livecomfortably.com about this). Any other ideas for how to use color to open up a space?

Answer: Hi Alex. Congrats on your apartment purchase! Indeed, earth tones are a great way to make a room look bigger. The key is to avoid anything too bright or dark, which can make the space feel more closed-in. Whites and pastels are good options, too. Another good color tip is to focus on just one color in the room. A more complicated color palette can make the room seem smaller and too full of stuff. Our eyes glide over a monochromatic room, while they are repeated stopped short in a small room filled with lots of color. Just because the room is monochromatic doesn't mean it has to be boring, though. Using just one color allows you to focus on other interior design concerns, such as interesting textures and lines.Your floor and ceiling choices can also make your room seem bigger or smaller. Lighter colors for both make small spaces look bigger. Lighting is really key, too. Maybe you lucked out with a city apartment with tons of windows, skylights, etc. If not, make sure that you've got lots of artificial lighting in the apartment. You could consider installing extra track lights along the ceiling, for example.

Answer: I also have a relatively small home I have used Silver Gold and dark green(in the office ) w/swiss coffee ceilings all the metal look by Ralph Lauren they look amazing My main choice is called tropical beeze its somewhere between yellow and a hay color. As a rule I am typically NOT a yellow person so knoe this is a good combination when toward the hay color side. My bathroom is chocolate brown,. Did I say I am apainting contractor? I painted every six months until I found this choice of color and brand of paint. I also use oversized art instead of small pieces. It really works
