| Question: Can you build an interlock patio overtop of an existing concrete pad |
Post Your Answer To The Question Above:
| Answer: I don't think it's a good idea to put pavers over concrete. You really need a good gravel and sand base underneath and, if the concrete would ever crack underneath, you'd have movement in your finished patio. I know it that removing a concrete slab can be an expensive home improvement option, but it is the best option in the long run. This is particularly true in colder areas, where you have to worry about temperature extremes and how they affect concrete. |
| Answer: Hi Don!
Allison points out some good concerns, but if your concrete pad is in good condition, you might have good results laying the patio over the concrete. Make sure that your concrete is not heaving up or sinking down in any places, and that any cracks are minor. If this is the case, you can proceed with the patio as long as you properly prepare the surface first. You'll need at least one-half of an inch of coarse sand laid down on top of the concrete to provide a good base for the patio. Make sure that you know how much height the patio pavers plus the coarse sand will add to the existing concrete. If the patio connects directly to a door of your house, it's essential that the pavers are not so high that they prevent the door from opening outward. |
