Question: I live in Michigan and was wondering how long a licensed contractor is obligated to guarantee his work?

Answer: I searched through the Michigan.gov web site and could not find any specific law requiring contractors to guarantee work for a certain period. In my experience, it varies greatly by the contractor and the type of work. Any guarantee should be in writing and it should be detailed about what it covers and what they will do to fix a problem. Many contractors I've worked with give one year guarantees on their work, but, again, it depends on the project. I had a basement waterproofed and they gave a 10 year guarantee; roofing materials often have long time periods as well.
