Answer: The cost per square foot will vary based on several factors – where you are and the cost of materials and labor in that town; the type of construction – brick versus siding, etc. Also, if you are in an area that has seen a lot of growth, the prices might be higher than, say, in a more rural area. In the Chicago area, where prices are higher, new construction goes for around $200 to $300 per square foot, with the top end being very high end homes with expensive finishes. I would think Nebraska would be in the $150 to $225 range. I would check with a few builders or contractors in the area and they can probably give you a ballpark range over the phone. Remember to check out a builder carefully before committing. Talk to previous customers and, in this slowing home market, look for competitive pricing. You don't necessarily want the cheapest builder, but you want a realistic deal given the market.
