Q&A | Landscape and Landscaping : FRENCH DRAIN BASIN

Title of Question: FRENCH DRAIN BASIN

Name:Bob Kraus  City: Olathe, KS
Question: I am looking at putting in a french drain because my backyard is really muddy for days after it rains. The problem is I don't know where to go, every direction is uphill. Could I bury a 50 gallon drum or somthing for the drain to into and then drain out from there? Other ideas?

Answer: The French drain and drum sounds like a good idea. Another thought is to create a large pond or flowing water feature area that can serve two functions – the drainage and also create an inviting place to sit and relax. You would have to be careful about keeping the water moving with a pump or it could turn into an algae pit. You could create a nice curving and sloping landscaped area with rocks and gravel for the water to cascade over during heavy rains. Then look for plants that can stand plenty of water. Perhaps you dig a large pit and fill it with gravel and slope the area so the water flows into it. Sort of like turning lemons into lemonade.
