| Question: I would like to finish my attic above my garage but don't know if the joist would be adequate? They are 2x12, 16" on center and span 20 feet. |

| Answer: I would talk with your local building department or a contractor to see what the codes allow. If the 20 foot span is too long, you could always "sister" joists next to the existing ones to add strength. It also depends on what you plan to put on the floor. If you are adding a heavy whirlpool tub, for example, you obviously want that area to be stronger. |
