| Question: I want to hang sheetrock over plaster walls. How do I figure out where the studs are? |
Post Your Answer To The Question Above:
| Answer: It is not easy, but it can be done! Depending on the age of the house, the studs are probably 16 to 24 inches apart (on center). Start in a corner and measure out 16 inches, then tap on the wall to see if the sound is more dense than the area around it. You also can use the window framing as a guide and look along the baseboards for signs of nails holes that were used to secure the baseboard to a stud. If you have an unfinished attic or basement, sometimes you can see how far apart the studs are spaced. Also, remember that when you reinstall the trim around the doors, windows and the baseboards, you will have to trim them to fit the added thickness of the drywall over the plaster. That can be a tricky home improvement project. Good luck! |
