Q&A | Home Improvement : Heating/cooling for sunroom

Title of Question: Heating/cooling for sunroom

Name:Quita  City: Rockville, MD
Question: We have purchased a home with a sun room. I would love to use the room as additional living space, but the room does not have a heating/cooling source. Any suggestions? Any furniture suggestions also? Thanks

Answer: A few things to consider are what type of heating you have for the rest of the house. If it is gas forced air, how easy would it be to run more duct work? With a boiler, is there a way to easily get extra piping there from a basement or nearby radiator (then you have to buy the radiator). One solution we used in our 9 by 7 sunroom is electric baseboard heat. It works great and can be turned on and off (and set to a temperature) as needed. Don't get the cheap "fin" kind, as it doesn't work as well. We spent about $350 on the heater (hard wired, plus electrical contractor's costs). Also think about insulation – is there any in the walls? How weatherproof are the windows? You don't want all your heat going right outside. Good luck!

Answer: We're having the same problem as you are. Right now, it's a question of how to cool it with summer coming on. We used window fans last summer and it helped except on the 90 degree plus days. You can also reverse the fans so they pull out the hot air, then in the evening, turn them to the regular setting so they blow the cooler nite air in. We used a portable heater this winter to heat the room every so often when we had company and wanted to have more room. It's a problem tho, as you've discovered. If anyone else has answers, I'd love to hear them. Spring and fall are wonderful times to have a sunroom! Wish it could be winter and summer too.

Answer: The best answer that I have come up with is a mini-split heat pump. About $2K installed.
