| Question: I want to give an aged look to some aluminum tins I have, and can only find solutions to shine them up. Anyone know how I can make them look older, darker, discolored, etc? More of an antiqued look? |
Post Your Answer To The Question Above:
| Answer: Hi Carolyn! You could try painting them with linseed oil (used by artists, available at most arts and crafts stores) then putting them in a very hot oven. Though I have not tried this myself, I have heard that this gives aluminum an attractive aged look. You could try this with a piece of aluminum foil and see if you like the results before committing to using the process on your tins. Needless to say, be very, very careful when you are handling the hot tins. Aluminum foil can be used to remove tarnish from silver by attracting the tarnish. I'm wondering if you could use a similar process with your tins and some tarnished silver, to get the tarnish onto your tins. The process works like this: line the bottom of a glass, oven-safe dish with aluminum foil. Put in nearly boiling water, and add around two teaspoons of baking soda and one teaspoon of salt to the water. Add the silver, making sure that it is touching the aluminum foil. I don't see why you couldn't substitute your tins for the aluminum foil. Again, I'd test first with the foil to make sure you like the look. |
