| Answer: Hi Kate!
Unsealed pressboard disintegrates when it gets wet. Before you worry about how you are going to replace the pressboard, make sure that you know where the water has been coming from, and that you've addressed the problem. You don't want any moisture on the subfloor when you put down your new pressboard or tile. If the moisture remains, it will be only a matter of time before the pressboard fails again, or the tiles peel off the floor. Once you've got the leak fixed, I think that either replacing the pressboard or extending the tile into the under-sink area should work just fine. What do you store in the cabinet? I'd avoid putting any food products under there if you are going with the tiles, because pests might be able to get in more easily. If you're like me, though, you just store some cleaning products and your trash under there, which I don't foresee being a problem. One other thing: are your cabinets still sturdy with the shelf removed? You'll want to make sure that it isn't responsible any structural support before you replace it with the tile. |
| Answer: How do you cut out a damaged subflooring that is right at the base of the kitchen sink cabinet without causing too much weight on the remaining subflooring and to keep from warping with the new patch? |
