Question: I am going to have to refinish my wood flooring in the kitchen. How do I tell whether it is a laminate or hardwood?

Answer: Look for an indiscreet area where the wood meets the wall, such as in a closet. Can you pull of part of the baseboard and see the profile of the product. Hardwood is pretty distinguishable, as it is thicker and more solid than a laminate floor. Another option is to take a little sandpaper and scuff a small area, again in a closet or somewhere inconspicuous. If it is laminate flooring you'll see the top layer peel off. Also look at the graining. If it is too "perfect" and looks the same from board to board, then it is laminate flooring. Unfortunately, you can't sand a laminate floor, as you can with real wood.
