Title of Question:
Mailbox Delima
Name:Scott City: Malvern

| Question: I'm not sure if this is the correct place to put this, but I need to know how to put in a mailbox post and attach the mailbox to it. I set out with a 4' 4x4 post and the box which is a standard size (el cheapo). but I found that there is no way to attach the box to the post.
I can't afford to buy a whole new "set" at the moment and I have some spare lumber (2x4's and some half inch stuff) |
Post Your Answer To The Question Above:
| Answer: Hi Scott! First of all, to put your post into the ground, you will want to use a post hole digger. The postal service has regulations about mailboxes: the height should be right around 42 inches from the ground to the bottom of the mailbox, and it needs to be around 2 feet from the curb. Once you've found the right spot for your mailbox, use the post hole digger to dig your hole 6 inches deeper than it would need to be to end up at the correct height from the ground. Fill these 6 inches in with gravel, which will help with drainage. Mix up your concrete, and pour it in the hole around the post. Pour the concrete until it is around 2 inches from the top of the hole. Let the concrete set up completely, then cover it over with soil for a nice, clean look. To get the mailbox attached to the post, you'll want to look for some mailbox attachment brackets at your hardware store. They are made to fit a standard 4 X 4 post like yours. If you still have your old mailbox, you could even just recycle its attachment brackets. |
