Q&A | Household Emergencies : New finyl floor has bubbles/ripples- help

Title of Question: New finyl floor has bubbles/ripples- help

Name:lois  City: sarasota
Question: reposting original question.... new sheet vinyl installed 2 weeks ago ..just started showing some large bubbles/ripples in several areas - is there a remedy without ripping-out entire floor -when stepping on these areas it feels 'hollow' (as opposed to feeling 'squishy' as if there was undried glue) -floor was full-paste over leveled-cement... thanks in advance

Answer: Hi Lois, Bubbles in vinyl floors that show up shortly after installation usually mean that the installers did not wait long enough for the adhesive to out-gas after applying it. The adhesive out-gassed after the vinyl was down, and therefore, the gas it released is now trapped under the vinyl. There are two ways to fix the bubbles, depending on their size. If they are under an inch in diameter, use a thick sewing needle to poke a hole all the way through the vinyl in the center of the bubble. Put a towel over the bubble and apply heat to the area with an iron. This will relax the vinyl so it can flatten. Put some heavy books on the spot. This should allow the floor to rebond, and the bubbles should be fix. For bubbles larger than an inch in diameter, start with the towel and iron step first. Once the floor is softened, you'll want to use a razor to cut an X shape in the bubble. Peel the four edges created by the cut up, being careful not to tear the softened vinyl. Apply vinyl adhesive according to the directions on the package. Once it is tacky, press the edges back down. Put some wax paper on the floor, and weigh it down with books. After a day or so, remove the books and seal the repair using a vinyl seam sealer.
