Answer: This is not a fun or easy home improvement project, but here goes. You basically want to patch the hole with joint compound, then, when it is still drying, use a textured brush (wallpaper brush from a paint store works well) to create a similar pattern on the wall. Use the end of the bristles and dot on some texture using the joint compound that is already on the wall or new joint compound. This takes lots of playing around with the brush to find the right texture. If you find that the texture just isn't looking good, take a wet rag and wipe it off. Ironically, this project is easier with plaster walls because they are naturally uneven. With drywall, you're almost forced to make it look too perfect. If all else fails, get it as close as you can, then use a flat or eggshell paint and call it a day!
