Q&A | Decks : Rooftop deck railing

Title of Question: Rooftop deck railing

Name:Janet  City: Toronto
Question: We are planning to build a rooftop deck. First, the roof needs re-roofing to correct a water pooling problem. For the decking material, we would like to use light weight decking tiles. My question is, how is a railing attached if it cannot permeate the roof membrane or be attached to heavier decking material (a safety railing is needed on 3 sides).

Answer: The best way to do this is to install the railings first, before the roofing or decking material. You or the contractor would then cut the roofing material to fit around the posts, making sure to use proper flashing to prevent any water issues. I'm not sure how this works with decking tiles, but there should be a way to do it. One thing to check on is how much weight the decking tiles can handle. You don't want to get too many people on them and then wear through to your roofing material. Good luck!
