| Answer: Hi Adam,
You'll need to do some measuring and some basic geometry to figure out the square footage for a room. First, measure the length and width of the room using a measuring tape. Height doesn't come into the picture at all, so you won't need to worry about measuring that. You'll basically be finding the area of each room for which you need the square footage. The formula for the area of a rectangle is length multiplied by width. So if your room measures 10 feet by 5 feet, the square footage is 50 feet. It can get a little bit more complicated with rooms that are not standard rectangles. If you've got an L-shaped room, for instance, you can break it into two rectangles, find the square footage for each one, and add the results together. If you've got a room with a diagonal wall in it, you'll also need the formula for triangles. Find the measurement of the base and the height (don't worry about the diagonal, or hypotenuse), multiply the base by the height, and divide by 2. No matter how strangely shaped a room is, you should be able to break it down into a series of rectangles and triangles. Hope this helps! |
