Q&A | Floors and Stairs : Strong floor varnish for pet owners?

Title of Question: Strong floor varnish for pet owners?

Name:Tami  City: East Moline, IL
Question: I've stripped & am sanding hardwood floors.I want to put a finish on the floors that will hold up to our rambunctious dogs- protect from the damage their toenails can leave. Is there a varnish that's also environmetally conscience?

Answer: While I am not familiar with environmentally friendly floor sealers (if there are any?), I would recommend using as many coats of sealer, stain, etc. that you can manage. Four coats of a polyurethane should give you strong protection, although it won't prevent all scratches. Another piece of advice is to use a satin finish versus a semi-gloss. The satin finish looks more natural and is not as shiny as the semi-gloss. It, therefore, will not show as many scratches. Good luck!
