Question: we had a one-time moisture problem in our unfinished basement and now have a mildew smell. any idea how to get rid of this?

Answer: Hi Eileen, Getting rid of the smell is a two-part process. First, you should clean the concrete floors and walls with a bleach and water solution. Apply the solution, let it sit for a few minutes, and then rinse. After you've washed the concrete, make sure that you dry it as thoroughly as possible. I've heard of people using old push brooms to quickly cover their walls and floors with the bleach solution, and it seems as though this would really save time. The second part of the process is prevention. If you have any windows in your basement, open them frequently to give the moisture in the air a chance to escape. You should also consider buying a dehumidifier for the space. If you have any concerns about the moisture returning, I'd definitely invest in a dehumidifier.
