Answer: Hi Theresa! The area between the insulation and subfloor is a common nesting spot for carpenter ants. Carpenter ants prefer moist areas, so if the insulation is absorbing and holding moisture, it could be providing them with a comfortable living environment. It's important to keep your foundation as dry as possible because it can serve as carpenter ants' entrance to the rest of your home. If there is anything you can do to increase the air circulation over the insulation, that can help to make it less attractive to the ants. It would help if you knew the location of the ants' nest. Carpenter ants will travel as far as 200 yards to find food, so the nest is not necessarily in your home. It could also be outside in your landscaping, or even in your neighbor's yard. The next time you see a carpenter ant, track its path through and out of your house. Carpenter ants mark their trails and follow the same one over and over again, so if you can cut off their entry point into the house, it should really help to keep them out. If you discover that their nest is inside the wood of your house, it is a good idea to seek out a professional exterminator to make sure that you totally eliminate the nest.
