| Question: We fell in love with a cherry wood floor we saw, but it is pricey. We are thinking of it in the kitchen, but we have young kids. Are we nuts or should be go for it? |
Post Your Answer To The Question Above:
| Answer: Cherry is a fabulous wood and provides a good look, but I would hesitate to put it in a kitchen with small children (or pets). It is a softer wood than oak or maple, for example and will scratch much more easily. You could try Brazilian cherry, which is much harder and has deeper black and red variations. I would talk with a few flooring contractors and visit some showrooms. Make sure you ask about the hardness of the wood, as with maple there are soft maples and hard maples. When the floor is installed, have the contractor put on 4 coats of polyurethane for protection, not the typical 2 or 3 they like to recommend. |
