Answer: Hi Della! The first thing to think about is price. Custom cabinets are usually considerably more expensive than stock cabinets because they are handmade to perfectly fit your kitchen. The fact that they are handmade for you is their big draw. You get to pick absolutely everything about them, from the outside finish to the arrangement of the drawers and the shelf arrangement inside each cabinet. If you've got the money to spare and you have a very specific idea of what you are looking for in a cabinet, custom might be the way to go. Stock cabinets are pre-made, so your choices for color, finish, and size are much more limited. You would probably need to get some spacer pieces to cover up gaps because the cabinets will not fit perfectly into your kitchen layout. There are some very nice stock cabinets on the market, though. Just because they are stock cabinets does not mean that they are not well-made of high-quality materials. One other thing to consider is how soon you want to have your cabinets. Custom cabinets take longer to get installed because they must be constructed first according to your specifications. Stock cabinets can be installed more quickly.

Answer: There also are kitchen cabinets considered "semi-custom," which means the manufacturer has several options for customizing the products in their line. This can be a good middle ground if you want a little more personalization, but don't want to have them made from scratch. Some manufacturers have special glazes and finishes, for example, that are only available in a semi-custom line. If your budget is more toward stock cabinets, consider adding crown molding and a few glass doors to give them a more custom look.
