Question: My cedar deck has turned greyish and I want to stain it. Should I sandblast it or pressure wash it or just sweep it?

Answer: The easiest thing to do first is to wash it down with a bleach and water solution (one quarter bleach to three quarters water). Use a scrub brush with a long handle and a smaller brush for in between the railings. You will be amazed at the difference. If that doesn't remove all the dirt and discoloration you may want to pressure wash it. You can rent a machine or hire a contractor for that. If you then want it to look like a cedar deck again, let it dry for a few days and then stain it the color you want. I think the reason it is turning gray is that the stain is wearing off, so make sure you put a good coat on, then reapply every two to three years.
