Answer: Depends upon your State, National, or Local building code. But if you are in the United States and your State has adopted the International Codes Council International Residential Code, the answer is: (Sections R202 and Sections R310) 1) All emergency escape and rescue openings shall have a minimum net clear opening of 5.7 square feet. (Section R310.1.1) -The exception is that if the window is less than 44" above or below the outside grade, the net clear opening can be 5 square feet 2) Minimum clear opening height shal be 24" (Section R 310.1.2) 3)Minimum opening width shall be 20". (Section R310.1.3)
