Answer: Hi Chris! The holes go down. This might seem counterintuitive, because if the holes were on the top, they could catch the rainwater as came through the soil. However, by putting the holes in the pipe on the bottom, you can utilize one of water's basic properties: hydrostatic pressure. Water will always flow from an area of higher hydrostatic pressure to an area of lower pressure. The water collects in the gravel around the pipe because the hydrostatic pressure is lower in the gravel than in the soil around the gravel. Similarly, the water will move through the gravel and into the pipe because the hydrostatic pressure in the pipe is lowest of all.
