| Question: Hi all,
I need to build a cedar fence and found a dealer that has very cheap prices on grade 3 cedar fencing. My problem is it is 5 hours away and I have no idea what grade 3 cedar looks like, I have only seen grade 1 and 2. Does anyone have a picture somewhere of what a grade 3 cedar board would look like? I don't want to drive 10 hours just to find it looks horrible!!
I have searched and searched to no avail. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks

| Answer: Hi Jim!
I found a link for you. The grade three is the third one from the top: http://www.grovecedar.com/products.htm. It doesn't look all that different from grade two to me. If you want to do some more online searching on your own, try using an advanced search on your search engine. Search for results for "grade three cedar" that do not include the word "elementary." Hope this helps! |
| Answer: Jim, while I'm not familiar with grade 3 cedar, we did recently have a fence installed with grade 1 cedar. I was shocked at how expensive the materials were and even got about eight estimates before biting the bullet and doing it. Everyone I talked to, from the fence companies (who I know will be biased) to our regular contractor, said that it is worth buying the nicer material because it will last longer and weather better. I'm in Chicago, so weather is a major factor. Just something to weigh in. I am all for saving money, but I would ask about the longevity, as you don't want to be installing a fence too often. Have you tried talking to a local lumber yard about the difference? Good luck! |
| Answer: #3 is a utility-grade, each producer grading differently - what one producer grades #3 would end up in the mulch chipper to another.
The only way to get an accurate idea of what this particular mill is producing is to ask for representative samples.
Don't get your hopes too high; better to pay the going rate for a decent board than to pay 2/3's for a lift that's half lost to rot and wane.
