Question: how can I lay a patio with two different size blocks one 16" the other 18" in a 12 by 13 foot area

Answer: This is the type of home improvement project that requires fitting the patio pieces together like a jigsaw puzzle. Depending on the look you want and the number of patio blocks you have in each size, you are basically laying them out until you find a pattern you like. You're likely going to have some cutting, unless you want larger grout type lines in some areas. I would recommend laying the blocks so they are a couple inches offset from each other to make a more interesting pattern. This may waste more materials, but it will avoid the checkerboard look.
