Title of Question:
landscaping a hill
Name:Deb City: Troy

| Question: we have to walk up a hill to our front door. The incline is about 10% to 15%. I want to build a walk out of stone or brick, but would like to landscape right next to the walk. The distance from the house to the walk is about 6 feet, and would like to landscape that approximately 5 feet all the way up the hill which would be approx 30 feet. This is pretty much full sun... any ideas on landscaping a 5 x 30 foot area next to the house? |

| Answer: I'm assuming you want to do this yourself versus hiring a landscaping contractor. Either way, focus on plantings that have a horizontal or cascading growth pattern versus a vertical orientation. Obviously you don't want shrubs to look slanted. Weigela, for example, are shrubs that can grow almost sideways, depending on the variety. Roses also can work. You just don't want structured hedges as this will draw attention to the hill. There also are many ground covers that you can put in front of shrubs and have them cascade down the incline in a natural fashion. I would talk with a local nursery about what grows best in your area and most can give you ideas without having to draw up a full plan. |
