Question: if i am laying simple 18 inch square slabs, will a sand base suffice rather than using gravel as well

Answer: Hi Terry! What is the ground on which you are going to lay the slabs like? If you've got it nice and flat, without any big divots, and if the ground is the same consistency over the whole area (no very wet, swampy areas, for example), you shouldn't need the gravel. The gravel serves as a leveler for the stones, but if things are level already without it, you can omit this step. Make sure that the sand you're using is coarse sand for patio applications rather than regular building sand. The coarse sand is needed to hold the slabs in place and to provide good drainage. Your sand layer should be at least an inch and a half thick.
