Q&A | Bathrooms : new bathroom floor

Title of Question: new bathroom floor

Name:Tamara  City: Oak Park
Question: Is it possible to retile a floor right on top of a ceramic floor? It is in decent condition (only house settling cracks) but is very outdated. I like ceramic, but don't think I would if I had to chip it all off of the floor before putting down new tiles! They are the very little tiles,1x1 inch, with grout in between, on a 6x6 ft bathroom floor-if that makes a difference.

Answer: You don't want to go right over ceramic tile with new tile. The main problem is that the tile is not even and flat all the way across, as you have grout lines and varying edges. The best approach is to either remove all the tiles and start over (I know… I know…it's a lot of work!) or add cement board and then the new tile. The cement board is a very durable base on which to lay the new tile. The problem you run into is that you are adding to the height of the floor. This could make the floor higher than the threshold, which you don't want, or force you to remove the baseboard and reinstall it so it sits on the new floor height. Good luck with this home improvement challenge!

Answer: Should we place cement board down first before we put in cabinets? We are laying tile for the floor.
