| Answer: Hi Joe! I've got a cat with the same bad habit, so I've researched this a bit. There are lots and lots of plants that possibly might make your cat sick, so it is much easier to list the ones that shouldn't. African Violets are nontoxic, but they're awfully small. If you're looking for a bigger impact, consider a Rubber Plant. You can get them in lots of sizes, and they have shiny dark green leaves. Ferns grown as houseplants should be safe, with one major exception. The very popular Asparagus Fern's leaves can cause irritation. The Asparagus Fern is not actually a fern at all, though. It's a member of the lily family. After you've carefully vetted your regular houseplants, don't let your guard down with seasonal bulbs. Narcissus and Amaryllis are both poisonous. Another alternative is to buy some plants specifically for your cats to chew on. Pet stores sell "Cat Grass" seeds and plants that many cats find tasty. Catnip and Catmint are always popular options, too. |
