Question: Is it too late to plant tulip bulbs in the Midwest? How do I keep squirrels away from them?

Answer: Now is a great time for any type of landscaping project, including planting bulbs. When you plant in the fall, it gives the bulbs that much longer to acclimate and get ready for next year's blooming. Squirrels and other animals can be a problem, however. The best way to combat squirrels is to put a wire mesh covering over the bulbs and then take it off before they bloom in the spring or summer. For next year, there also are non-toxic sprays that work sometimes when sprayed around the garden. You have to keep reapplying them. Check with a local nursery for more.
