Question: We have a large (dinner size) area of plaster that has come off from a water leak after a hurricane. We want to move, so we'd like the most cost effective way to repair the damage.

Answer: The easiest way to repair a hole in a plaster ceiling is by cutting out the unstable part and adding in a piece of drywall, then using joint compound to "feather in" the areas around the hole. If you have done some plaster repair in the past, you should have a handle on this. If not, ceilings can be tricky, as it is difficult on your neck and shoulders when doing the work. Depending on how visible the area is, you could try it yourself and if it doesn't work out well, look for a handyman or painting contractor who will do a small job. It might just be $100 or so if you then do the priming and painting after the contractor is done. (Also, make sure you bleached the area where the water damage was so you don't develop a mold problem).
