| Answer: Hi Mike,
Unfortunately, there's no sure way to get the molding off without damaging it, but I do have some suggestions for you. Most wood molding is installed using countersunk finishing nails. You won't have much luck removing the nails individually using a nail puller or hammer claw because they're sunk too far down in the wood. Instead, I'd try carefully prying the side and top molding off in one piece, nails and all. If the molding is painted, run a utility knife along its edge first to free it from the drywall. Next, stick a putty knife with a stiff blade in the crack between the drywall and molding, and start gently prying. You want to work your way around the molding, slowly separating it from the wall. As soon as the space between the molding and dry wall is big enough, you can switch to a pry bar. A wood block held against the drywall can help you to get leverage. Good luck with your home improvement project! I think that working slowly and steadily is the key to success. |
