Q&A | Heating and Cooling : repair or replace duct work

Title of Question: repair or replace duct work

Name:Barbara  City: Gastonia
Question: My home was built in the 50's. So we have sheet metal duct work. We had the outside unit replaced a couple of years ago with an Electric only pump (was gas pack) There is no air circulating through the vents as of a few days ago, except in the hall bathroom which is very cold. My husband says its cheaper/easier to just replace the metal ducts with flex. Is this the best Idea? Or clean and repair the existing duct work?

Answer: Before you go replacing the duct work, check to see if all the duct work is open. Typically there are dampers in various spots that allow you to close off sections of the duct work. If any of those were accidentally closed by a repair person, that would block the flow of heat to those areas. Also check to make sure nothing is stuck in the duct work. If that isn't the problem, I'd start interviewing heating and cooling contractors and get their recommendations. Before hiring a company, make sure you check references and understand exactly what they are proposing. And, always get any contracts and warranties in writing.
