Title of Question: rotten trim

Name: Susy Sunshine    City:

Question: I have what I would call French doors although only one section is a door. I think it comes as a unit . . . frame and door together. The frame is rotting at the bottom although the movable door and fixed door are fine. Is the only way to fix this to replace the whole thing, doors and all? Not only does that sound expensive, but it sounds like a waste of perfectly good doors.

Answer: If the frame is rotting you may be able to repair it. Begin by determining why they are rotting. Is there water pouring down that a gutter can repair? Basically, fix the reason why they rot so it won't happen again. Then cut out the rot. Cut a new piece of wood to fill in the old section. Then use a product, like MinWax wood filler: http://www.minwax.com/products/woodmaint/wood-filler.cfm Sand as needed, paint, and ta-da...fixed! Good luck!
