spray painting homes

Question: how do you keep from sparing neighbors homes, cars, etc
Post Your Answer To The Question Above:
Answer: Hi Ed! First of all, you should never do your painting on a windy day. The wind can really carry the sprayed paint and increase the likelihood of the paint landing somewhere it shouldn't. Second, make sure that you know your sprayer. A typical power paint sprayer should be held around ten inches from the surface you are spraying. Practice on some old boards to get a feel for your sprayer. Third, be liberal with your use of drop cloths around your own yard, landscaping, and car, and be sure to mask off any areas that you want to avoid painting. As a courtesy, you will probably want to cover your neighbors' cars with drop cloths as well, or ask them to park further down the street for the few days you will be painting. Depending on how close their homes are to yours, you might need to think about covering the sides of their homes nearest yours as well. As long as you are diligent about keeping them informed about what you are doing and about protecting their possessions from paint, you should be in good shape.
Answer: Using a spray painter can be tricky, as it is difficult to keep the paint where you want it. Your best bet is to test it out in an area that is away from the neighbors until you get a handle on how to somewhat control it. Then perhaps you can put up large pieces of cardboard around the area you will be spraying or cover areas with heavy plastic. Obviously you'll also want to tape off windows and other things you don't want painted. This is one home improvement project that requires patience!
