Question: Refinishing old wooden cabinet - one door with glass pane - is stuck at bottom. Door is about 30 inches high and opens about one third of the way from top. Any suggestions?

Answer: Hi Pierce! First, I'd try working a putty knife into the crack where the bottom of the cabinet door meets the cabinet. If the issue is just that the door is painted shut at the bottom, or if the old hinge is no longer effectively holding the door, this might take care of your problem. You could also try tightening the top hinge on the cabinet door. This could help the door to swing open freely. One cause of old cabinet doors sticking is warped wood, or wood that has swelled due to seasonal humidity. You could try to reduce the humidity by running a hair dryer over the part that is sticking for a few minutes. If all else fails, I think your best option is to take the door off its hinges. If you are refinishing the cabinet, you'll probably be removing the hinges at some point anyway. Once you've got the door open, you can plane the bottom corners of the door to keep it from sticking in the future. I hope that one of these tricks works for you!
