Answer: There are devices called "stud finders" you can find at any home improvement or hardware store. They work well with drywall, but are not as consistent when trying to find studs through plaster. Another option is to tap on the wall with your knuckles. You should hear a more dense sound coming from the areas where the studs are. Look at the baseboards, if there are any in the closet, and try to find the small nail holes they used to install them. Ideally, they should have been nailing into the studs. And, if you have an unfinished attic that will offer a peak down the walls, this can tell you how far apart things are spaced. Good luck.
