Question: can grout be placed over existing grout where some but not all is missing? could caulking be used instead?

Answer: Hi Karen! You can indeed replace selected areas of grout. I would not recommend using caulk because there could be problems in getting it to adhere to the grout, and the bond between the caulk and the old grout will not be nearly so strong as the bond between the new grout and the old grout. To prepare the shower floor for grouting, you'll want to remove all of the loose or crumbling grout, and to remove at least 1/16 of an inch off the top of any old grout that you want to cover with new grout. Once this is done, clean the area where you will be applying the grout very well using a bleach solution. Dry the area thoroughly, and give it a day or two for any lingering moisture to dissipate. Then, you'll be ready to grout. You can get premixed grout at a hardware store. Just follow the directions on the package, and make sure that you give it an adequate amount of time to dry before getting it wet.
