Question: When is a good time to move perennials around now that it's almost fall?
Post Your Answer To The Question Above:
Answer: Now is a great time to move perennials around in most climates. You just want to wait for an overcast day that is not too hot. Water them well the day before and make sure you amend the soil where the plants are going into. It's a lot of work, but it will pay big dividends in your landscaping come spring. This is particularly true if you are dividing the plants and will soon see the multiplying factor at work.
Answer: Hi Sheila! Also, you want to consider when your perennials bloom. If they are spring blooming, now is a great time to move them. If they bloom in the very late summer or fall, it would be better to wait until spring. Moving them while they are blooming or have just bloomed puts unnecessary stress on them. When you are transplanting, make sure that you give the plants' foliage a nice, healthy trim. Removing around 1/2 of the foliage will not harm the plant, but help it, allowing it to spend its energy in developing a healthy root system.
