Title of Question: trees for privacy

Name:Steve  City: St. Louis
Question: We want to block out our neighbor's deck. The area gets plenty of sun. Any ideas for inexpensive trees to plant that will get 10 feet high?

Answer: Anytime I see a straight row of cone shaped arborvitae, it is obvious that the home owners are trying to screen something. What looks more natural is to try different trees and stagger the layout, so every other tree is a few feet in front of the others. To save money, start with 2 to 4 varieties that grow fairly quickly. You'll save on the trees and won't need a contractor to plant them. Try the techny arborvitae, which grows wider than the cone shaped ones and grows 6 to 12 inches a year. The thuja green giant grows 3 to 5 feet a year, up to 30 feet. It can be sheered to keep it shorter. Don't plant too close to begin with and always plant trees in odd numbers, as it looks more natural. Good luck!
