Q&A | Home Improvement : wallpaper disaster in the making

Title of Question: wallpaper disaster in the making

Name:Donna  City: Baltimore
Question: if the old wallpaper is still in excellent condition ( no peeling or bubbles) can you put new wallpaper directly over it? It is a small powder room, but the wallpaper there is ugly and I just want a simple redo, not a full room makeover.

Answer: While some people try to put wallpaper over wallpaper, I would not recommend it. Chances are you will go to all the work, then realize that parts of the walls are not smooth and the overall look is just not great. I know it is more home improvement than you want, but a better approach is to take off all the old wallpaper, repair any holes and start fresh. You can use a product such as DIF that you mix with water in a spray bottle and spray on to remove the wallpaper. Just don't leave it on longer than 5 to 10 minutes or it dries and won't work well. Also make sure you get the thin paper backing off with the old wallpaper.
