Answer: While we do not have wide plank floors, I have seen them and they are very cool. They come in a variety of woods and sizes, ranging up to 8 inches or so. It is a very unique look and gives a true old house feel to a home. They also are used in new houses to make a bold statement. Yes, they can be costly – perhaps two or three times the price of regular wood. You could try adding them in a few places to save money, but you have to be careful about how it looks butting up against a different floor. If rooms flow together, its better to use the same material. I would go to a flooring store or call a flooring contractor and ask to see it installed somewhere. Good luck!

Answer: Hi Joe! My parents have wide plank wood floors in their kitchen and dining room. They are really into the American primitive look with their furnishings, so the floors really work well. Their floors are not tongue-and-groove, but rather just wide wood planks side by side by side. Rather than regular flooring nails, big, square-headed nails were used. It's a cool-looking floor, but it is definitely harder to maintain than other wood floors. There are cracks between each plank in the flooring, and crumbs and debris get caught in these cracks pretty easily. Also, the nails are driven in slightly below the level of the planks, so crumbs and dirt gather there, too. Cleaning the floors is a two step process: first, you vacuum all of the cracks and the indentations where the nails are, and then, you mop. If you are okay with this extra cleaning step, the floors might be a great option for you.
