Replacing a Ceiling Tile
Who hasn’t seen tea stains in acoustical tile ceilings? It’s almost as if they were born to harbor them. After locating the reason for the tile damage (and making repairs, if necessary), replacing a tile in your ceiling is an easy repair. The hardest part will be to find a 2x4 or other strut that will act as a support for the tile while the adhesive dries. In a pinch you can use a few finishing nails sunk into the wood framing, but you might have to patch the nail holes left behind. It may be easier, however, than lugging a 2x4 in your car and having it rot in your backyard afterward.
Note: if the framing is metal instead of wood, a strut may
be your only option. If you’re determined to try taping the tile, duct
tape will hold better than masking tape.
